Advanced Shipfitter / Fabricator (Multi-Pass Tack & Burn)

Hutco, Inc. is currently seeking experienced Advanced Shipfitters / Fabricators for shipbuilding work in Newport News, Virginia. Qualified candidates must have a minimum of 4 years of documented commercial or naval shipfitting experience. This position requires advanced structural fabrication, multi-pass tack welding, burning, heating, and the ability to interpret complex structural drawings and blueprints.

Required Experience & Skills

• Minimum 4 years of documented commercial or naval experience as a First Class Shipfitter.
• Proficient in multi-pass tack welding.
• Experience using oxygen/propane burning and heating torches.
• Ability to read and interpret complex structural assembly drawings, blueprints, weld symbols, and fractional dimensions.
• Experience laying out, assembling, fitting, and replacing structural piece parts, hull inserts, and penetrations.
• Experience working in physically demanding shipbuilding, marine, or heavy steel fabrication environments.
• Familiarity with applicable shipbuilding OSHA safety requirements.
• Experience using grinders, needle guns, and other vibratory tools.
• Experience with air carbon arc gouging.

Welding Qualification

All Shipfitters must successfully complete the Multi-Pass Tack Welder Qualification Test using the SMAW process with MIL-10718-M (A-5A) filler metal. Testing includes:

• Vertical Up (3F) position
• Overhead (4F) position
• One-hour practice session
• One-hour Vertical Up test
• One-hour Overhead test
• Visual Inspection of Weld Level I assessment

Candidates must be prepared to pass the required qualification testing without prior training at the Newport News welding school.

Physical Requirements

• Frequently lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
• Climb, crawl, stand, bend, and work in confined spaces.
• Work in environments involving temperature and humidity extremes.
• Work around fumes, odors, dust, and other normal shipyard conditions.
• Use various hand and power tools.
• Perform physically demanding work in tight or restricted areas.
